24th October 2007 Congratulations to the rowers who were successful at the Portadown Marascull - the longest race in the Irish Rowing calendar. The Boys' Four gained silver, the Boys' Quad came 4th and Mark Magill won the Junior Single Sculls. Congratulations also to the MCB Junior Boys' Quad Scull who won the "Scullers Mini Head of the River" race last Saturday. Methody had a great day, taking 5 of the top 10 places.
The Race 2007 The third annual boat race between RBAI and MCB took place on Saturday 9th June. More events were added to the programme this year - a Junior 15 eights race, a spare men's double, the Junior 16 eights race, the ladies race (against Portora) and the Boys' 1st eights race. The first race of the day was the junior 16 boys eights. It was a tightly contested race for the first half but Inst pulled away and in the end won this by a comfortable three lengths. The second race was the spare men's race. This was a double sculls 500 metre sprint and crews were made up of those who just missed out on a place in the 1st eights. In a race to the line Methody just pipped Inst to victory by the slightest of margins, making for an extremely exciting race. Next in line was the Senior girls' invitation race in which Portora was the visiting crew. Despite the Methody girls' great effort a dogged and determined race by Portora saw them winning this event. In the other new race added to the programme, the Junior 15 boys eights, took place over 500 metres. Following a good start Methody pulled away and won convincingly. In the final race of the day the main event saw the Methody and Inst 1st Viiis going head to head. Methody took an early lead and looked to be well on their way to victory. However a strong comeback from Inst saw them take the lead on the final bend. Methody fought back and won in the end by a length and a half. This was the first time in the 3 years of "The Race" that the Methody crew has gone home with the Iniscarra Wood Trophy. Special thanks should go to the sponsors of the event, BTW Shiells and The Streat, who provided refreshments throughout the event which now has a very important place in the rowing calendar. Thanks must also go to all the coaches who made the day possible, particularly Mr Thompson, Mr Marron and Mr Forsythe. Also thanks to Inst and Portora for providing great competition and great entertainment for the spectators. Mention must go to Dr Gallagher who braved the rough water to follow one of the races in a launch! Well done to all our rowers: here's looking forward to next year!
