India 2007 - Diary 6
|
| India 2007 - Diary 6 |
Tuesday 30th October After the group hitting a low point over the weekend, I think we can all agree that today's activities definitely restored the group's enthusiasm and energy. Whether it was simply spending more time with the children, or doing something a little more pro-active, spirits were lifted and some tense faces were relaxed.
Anyone who visited the lanes of the slum today was truly inspired by the people and their surroundings, whether it was drinking hot chai with a lane volunteer, listening to Soni's testament in a slum dwelling, or hearing of the remarkable (and sometimes hilarious) stories that were told.
Every second is a new experience in the slum, but certain moments will always stay fresh, like listening to an 11 year old girl proudly recount all her responsibilities within her "lane", and realising how mature and strong these children are.
Many of us were lucky enough to spend some time in a special baby clinic at the centre this morning. We watched as what must have been close to one hundred infants were immunised against diseases like Hepatitis B, Polio and Diphtheria.
The nurse in charge was also kind enough to explain how often the babies got certain injections, and how records were kept. It was all very encouraging to know that so many children are, now thanks to Asha, being protected against diseases which would previously have killed hundreds. Kim Graham & Jamie Kirk
