The Spanish department aims to promote the learning of Spanish throughout the school.  In learning Spanish, pupils learn to appreciate the culture and ways of life of Spain and the Spanish-speaking world.  The language can be taken as an option in Form 2.  Pupils can then go on the study Spanish to GCSE and A Level or to drop the subject at the end of Form 3.

FACILITIES AND RESOURCES

The department is staffed by five full-time teachers and one foreign language assistant.  The main course book used for the lower school is Vaya Nuevo. For GCSE, Pronto is used at present. The GCSE classes have cassettes, listening and MCB-produced reading booklets which are used at home and in the class. There is the provision of satellite television with a Spanish channel. 

The AS / A level pupils use Sigue' 1 and 2 course book and cassette and various other authentic articles, language newspapers, websites, videos and literature set texts.

CURRICULUM

AQA is used for GCSE and EDEXCEL for AS/A level. 

EDUCATIONAL TRIPS / EXCHANGES

Last year the Spanish Department led a trip to Andalucía in southern Spain.  Twenty-four pupils took part and visited Granada, Malaga and Sevilla.   The most recent Spanish trip took place Easter 2005 to Barcelona, and we are actively seeking to establish links with Spanish schools for the purposes of exchanging e-mail, possibly leading to an educational exchange.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR

The junior Spanish club has only recently started and meets once every couple of weeks.   It aims to provide a friendly and enjoyable context for young pupils to find out about Spanish culture and language.
