‘To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child’. Cicero Just as popular interest in the past has arguably never been greater, so History at MCB thrives. We aim to build knowledge, develop skills and enhance understanding of the world around us. More importantly we want to make the study of the past accessible, stimulating and enjoyable. Part of being a historian is being able to question the information with which we are presented on a daily basis on television and in the newspapers. We need to be able to assess if this information is useful and reliable. These skills are taught and developed in History. We encourage judgement and analysis, independent study and, if you like to argue your case, then the study of History will benefit you greatly! STAFF - Miss H Chambers Head of Department

FACILITIES AND RESOURCES We use a wide variety of approaches, making use of ICT, our huge video collection and visits to the local Museum. We even design our very own Plague Remedies, board games on Cowboy Life, recreate the Bayeux Tapestry and First World War Trenches and advertise our new ride at Awful Towers based on the life of Bloody Mary. We want to bring the past to life and capture the interest of all who study History in a new and exciting way. | | | | | | Form Three - A First World War Dugout | | | | | | | | | | | | The essentials for any soldier at the Front | |
CURRICULUM History is taught in forms 1-6 and covers topics ranging from 1066-1991. These include: The Norman Conquest, Tudor England, The American West, The French Revolution and The Vietnam War. We also teach the History of our own country throughout the school and focus on Irish History at GCSE and at A Level. EDUCATIONAL TRIPS AND EXCHANGES
These take place when relevant, e.g. pupils studying the First World War and life in the trenches visit the Somme Heritage Centre to learn more about what life was like for soldiers fighting at the Front. |
