As Methody has expanded (from very small beginnings to over 2,300 pupils today), the curriculum has diversified and the expectations of pupils and parents in terms of curricular and extra-curricular facilities and provision have rocketed. The College has worked hard to meet those legitimate expectations. Methody, however, has reached the limits of what can be achieved in terms of further essential development within the current arrangement of buildings. Discussions have been taking place with the Department of Education for the past three years, with the joint conclusion that the only realistic solution is the wholesale redevelopment of the Malone Road campus. The necessity of replacing buildings that have reached the end of their useful life provides a unique opportunity to rebuild the school and set it on course for the next 100 years. Only the Main Block, McArthur Hall, the new Sports Hall & Art Department and the Chapel of Unity will be retained. Everything else will be demolished and replaced. The centrepiece of the ambitious plan will be the large teaching block in which all classrooms and science laboratories will be accommodated. The Whitla Hall, opened in 1935, will be replaced by the new Performing Arts Centre and Music Department. Design and Technology will be housed in the New Walton Centre where the name of Ireland's only Nobel Laureate in physics will be kept alive. The already excellent sports facilities on site will be further enhanced with the construction of a new swimming pool.
