Chapel of Unity

The Chapel of Unity stands at the centre of the school campus and bears witness to the Christian foundations of Methodist College.

 Chapel of Unity

Several hundred pupils (a year group) begin their school day at assembly in the Chapel. It is a place of tranquillity in the midst of a very busy school and provides a space for quietness and calm. The Christian Union and RE Department make occasional use of the Chapel for large gatherings. The Music Department uses the Chapel extensively for individual practice and public performance and provides the Chapel with its own award-winning Choir. (This Choir has an extensive repertoire of religious music). The Chapel Choir makes a significant contribution to College worship. The Boarding Departments gather on a Sunday evening for their weekly service, giving boarders a chance to have a time of reflection at the beginning of the week.

The organ in the Chapel was a gift from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. George Robson (organ builder to George lV) originally built it in 1830, and William Hill extended it in the 1880's. It was placed in the Chapel of Unity and substantially improved by Noel Mander. The Chapel itself was refurbished in 2004, when the removal of a large pulpit provided more space in the sanctuary area and greater flexibility of use.

Wedding at the Chapel of Unity

Each year a number of former pupils choose to get married in the Chapel of Unity. The intimate atmosphere provides a good setting for couples to make their marriage vows.

The College Chaplain is available to takes these wedding services, but couples may also invite their own minister to take part.

A walk around the Chapel reveals that much of its furniture and decoration is dedicated to the memories of Governors, staff and past pupils who died at a young age. Many of those remembered left Methody in their late teens to serve their country in the World Wars and did not return.

 Interior

As pupils, staff, parents and visitors enter and leave the Chapel, they pass through the oak doors which bear the College motto: Deus nobiscum, God with us. The Chapel contributes to the ideal of holistic education in body, mind and spirit.
