Boys' Boarding School House, as the boys' boarding department is known, is situated in the original College building, occupying all the accommodation above the ground floor, the basement area and some rooms on the ground floor itself. There is accommodation for approximately 95 boys in this complex, as well as 15 resident staff, three matrons, and one medical sister. This fosters a closely knit and friendly community. Besides dormitories or study-bedrooms, there are House-rooms with televisions, a reading room, common recreation rooms with snooker tables and other games facilities, hi-fi systems and access to computers. Girls' Boarding McArthur Hall is a gracious building set at the west end of the College grounds which provides accommodation for up to 72 girls. Facilities in the Hall include a spacious dining hall, a library, common rooms, study-bedrooms and dormitories, as well as games facilities and access to computers. A friendly atmosphere is fostered by the Lady Warden who is assisted by three matrons and fifteen assistant staff. Work and study During the day, all boarders are fully integrated with the day pupils of the College, following the normal educational programme for their age. Boarders under the age of 11 attend either Fullerton House or Downey House in the Preparatory Department. In the evening, boarders are able to use the facilities of the day school as well as those specifically provided for them. Homework and study in the evening are supervised by resident staff. The senior boys and girls are able to make use of the study facilities in the Sixth Form Centre during the week and at weekends. Welfare The catering for both boarding establishments is run jointly; boys, girls and staff take their meals together in the beautiful dining hall of McArthur Hall. The health of boarding pupils is safeguarded by a qualified resident sister in the Sanatorium, in which there is a dispensary and separate sick bays for cases needing special treatment. Boys and girls coming into residence must register with the doctors associated with the College. Dental and medical inspections are regularly held in the College, and dental treatment is carried out by the College Dental Officer. Religion Members of School House and McArthur Hall who belong to the main Christian denominations attend services in local churches on Sunday mornings according to denomination. On most Sunday evenings a short non-denominational service is conducted in the Chapel of Unity for all boarding pupils. On occasions, visiting speakers are invited to address staff and pupils; parents and guardians who may be delivering sons and daughters to the College are welcome to stay and join in the evening service. Classes for church membership or confirmation are arranged by the ministers of the churches attended, in collaboration with the Chaplain. Leisure Boarding pupils are encouraged to take advantage of the numerous clubs and societies in the College, as well as any activities arranged specifically for them. Parties are organised to make use of local attractions such as ten-pin bowling, cinemas, ice rink and leisure complexes. Supervised swimming sessions take place during the week and at weekends in the indoor pool and resident staff organise other sporting activities. Resident scholarships Scholarships are offered each year on the results of an examination for resident pupils or intending resident pupils who are under 12 years of age on 1st July. Canon Gamble scholarships are offered on GCSE results and are tenable by girl residents in McArthur Hall.
